CHAPTER 6: KEEP THE FIRE BURNING
Have you ever found yourself NOT doing the work that you KNOW you should do? Do you remember the last time you thought "Oh, I will do it later"? or had thoughts like "I know I should do that, but... (insert your favorite excuse here)"?
If the answer is 'yes' to any of the above questions then you lack the motivation required to take action. In this chapter we will cover motivation in detail and several effective ways to raise your motivation level.
Let's dive right in...
Motivation Is An Emotion
Motivation is a special kind of emotion. It's a drive or desire to do something. It pushes us to take action and move towards a specific outcome. Because of this, motivation is crucial for attainment of any worthwhile goal.
While healthy levels of motivation pump you up to take action, lack of the same can make you lazy and stagnant.
The more motivated you are, the more compelling taking action becomes. The lesser your motivation level, the more you are likely to procrastinate and make excuses. You can call motivation as the archrival of procrastination and laziness. In presence of high enough motivation, the individual will ignore any excuse and do what's required.
Successful people all over the world realize the power of motivation. They invest a lot of time, effort and money to maintain high levels of motivation.
My Experience With Motivation
Taking action is an important part of achieving success, and also one of the most difficult. We have to deal with criticism, excuses, rejections, failures, bad habits, lack of energy, social influence...
The list goes on & on..
It can be a daunting task if you lack the motivational power. In turn, it's easier to get past all the excuses and hurdles when you feel motivated to do something. Motivation will push you across every obstacle on your path.
Here's a personal example of how increased motivation can drive us to make bigger efforts every day.
In summer of 2011, I needed to change my apartment. It was in bad shape, and the rent had increased significantly in the recent months. Living there was uncomfortable, but not to an extent that would force me to do something about it on an urgent basis.
Even though thoughts about changing my apartment frequently invaded my mind, I did nothing about it and kept living there with 'slight discomfort'.
Then, a major change happened.
The owner of my apartment decided to begin re-construction work. Suddenly many people were hammering at the walls and water pipes. Dust and debris were everywhere (to which I am allergic) and the worst part was that the water supply was hampered because of the ongoing construction work in the entire building.
All of a sudden, it became much more uncomfortable to live there. Changing the apartment became my first priority. Earlier I used to ignore the thoughts of searching a new place to live, and now it became my prime goal.
My motivation was soaring. I immediately started visiting new apartments and did not stop until I found a new place to move in.
